The Origin of the MAMORI Brand
In Western Europe, linen has long been widely used, but in Japan, hemp (ōasa) has been deeply woven into daily life since before the Common Era. Hemp was valued not only as a textile but also as a spiritual material. It was used in sacred ropes (shimenawa) and protective amulets (omamori) at Shinto shrines, serving as a source of strength and protection for the Japanese people.
This rich culture of hemp, however, was nearly forgotten in Japan until quite recently.
We created MAMORI to revive this tradition and carry it into the modern era.
The name comes from the Japanese word mamoru(守る), meaning to protect or to preserve.
It reflects our commitment to protecting Japan’s traditional hemp culture, while also preserving the natural environment through the use of sustainable materials.
MAMORI carries the deeper meaning of offering spiritual protection, much like the sacred amulets (omamori) and rituals in which hemp has been used throughout Japanese history.
By naming our brand MAMORI, we express our commitment to carrying forward this ancient ancient cultural heritage, and reintroducing its beauty and value to the modern world.
